Internet Explorer end of support in Blackboard

Blackboard has just announced it will not longer be supporting Internet Explorer 10 and older. The only version of Internet Explorer that will be supported is IE 11. This is effective immediately. The alternative is to use Chrome, FireFox, or if you have Windows 10 you can use Microsoft Edge. Microsoft ended support for Internet Explorer 10 and older on January 12th, 2016. If you need assistance with using an alternative browser or upgrading to Internet Explorer 11 please contact TLT.

Possible bug in the Grade Center while using Safari 9

Some users may experience a bug with the Grade Center when using Safari version 9 on the Mac. This issue will not happen on Windows as Safari for Windows is not supported. When some users attempt to "Grade an Attempt" from the "View Grade Details" in the Grade Center you may receive an error. Closing Safari will also not resolve the issue. If you encounter an issue while using the Grade Center on Safari version 9, the only work around is to use Chrome or FireFox. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Blackboard Notification Settings Issue

We have identified an issue with Blackboard notification settings. First let me say that notification are working in Blackboard. Only changing the settings in Blackboard are the issue. If you attempt to change your course notification settings you will receive an error and if you attempt to change the settings using the bulk option you will not receive an error but the changes will not take effect. This is a known bug in Blackboard and they are working on a fix but at this time they do not have an ETA on a fix. This issue does not affect announcement notifications or emails in Blackboard. It only affects changing the notification settings. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

The renovations started on 22 December 2015. Battenfeld Auditorium is located in the Student Center at the corner of Rainbow and Olathe Blvd.  It can seat up to 590 people.  Battenfeld is equipped with a computer, a video/data projector, an electric projection screen, a high quality sound reinforcement system, a large podium with a gooseneck microphone, laptop cable with sound, and a Baby Grand Piano for entertainment.

For additional seating Battenfeld Auditorium audio and video can be combined into the adjacent Francisco Lounge to provide overflow for well attended events.  Francisco Lounge also has a stand-alone wireless microphone sound reinforcement system installed to support events scheduled there.

Classroom Update

TLT-Media just can’t leave well enough alone. In addition to upgrading 1/4th of our classroom computers in compliance with our 4 year replacement cycle, we have now installed 16:9 projectors and flat monitors with High-Definition HDMI capability in almost all of our classrooms and meeting rooms.  Lied Auditorium got a new SpaceSaver lectern to free up some real estate in the front and add some much needed practicality.  Just outside Lied in the Hixson Atrium, much requested electrical outlets have been added to satisfy the needs of the Community Blood Bank and various vendor shows.
Speaking of electricity, 2035 Delp got a shot in the arm with more electric receptacles around the room.  Device battery life is improving, but convenient places to charge up mid-day are still welcome.
IR/HIM had a complete re-engineering of the AV structure in 1008 Taylor with an under-carpet electric distribution product called THREAD.  They have wireless transmission to the new projector via a Barco ClickShare device so the clutter and trip hazards of wires and cables is virtually eliminated.  There is also a Smart Technologies KAPP digital capture and re-transmission dry erase board.

For a couple of years we have been working with Cynthia Ukoko in the Office of Accommodations. We have installed wireless FM transmitters in Rieke and Wahl East auditoriums for use with cochlear implants to help those with hearing loss have better access to instructors’ lessons.  We have now designed and purchased a multi-microphone portable system to use in any operating suite which will enable up to three people to have their speech transcribed into text and displayed on a monitor in the OR.  The Med student will now see what is being said or asked by the surgeon and his staff, something very difficult to accomplish in the midst of the noises of a typical OR procedure.

As always, here is the “file as work-in-progress” project report.  The biggest work in progress is the new Health Education Building (HEB).  When completed in 2017 it will house learning studios for the School of Health Professionals, The School of Nursing, and the School of Medicine.  The technology bid process is being delayed until later this year to ensure it will include the newest available products.

Until the next time, study hard, teach well, and have fun.
