TLC Scheduled Maintenance May 2-3, 2015

The TLC online compliance training system will be unavailable due to scheduled maintenance by the vendor from Saturday May 2 at 11:00 pm through Sunday May 3 at 3:00 am.  Please do not plan on completing any compliance training in TLC during this four hour window.

Annoucing New Document Cameras (ELMOs): Coming to our TLT-Media Classrooms

Most of our current document cameras, also called “ELMOs”, are 10-15 years old, outdated, or obsolete. They lack needed video inputs, outputs, and resolution to integrate with our current classroom technology. We’re very excited to upgrade and replace these systems!
We don’t want to disrupt year-end classes, so most replacements will occur after the semester ends, but we are replacing a few of the worst systems now. When this project is completed, all TLT-Media large/tiered classrooms and auditoriums will have our new documents cameras, except for Sudler and WHW Auditoriums which already have new/special-use cameras. (See the complete room list at the end of this email.) Also, documents cameras will be removed from all TLT-Media small classrooms, but document cameras will be available by request if you need one in a small classroom—either as a one-day request or for the entire semester. Our new model is the ELMO TT-12iD. It is “the is the next generation document camera in the popular TT-12 series”. The TT-12iD capabilities include 96x zoom (12x optical and 8x digital), AutoFocus, multi-directional camera positions, and HDMI with pass-through for direct connection to your laptop. Plus, it works through a built-in web camera, so you can record your camera output, as well as take and mark-up static images for later use.
This project also standardizes document cameras in all our rooms, so you now only need to learn how to use one model—plus, our support and maintenance is much easier. We will be including training for using these new cameras in our Classroom Technology training sessions offered each Fall semester, but if you’d like training now, we can arrange short one-on-one or departmental training. Scheduled Blackboard Outage (4/16)

Social Learning Strategies

The saying goes "two heads are better than one," but is it?  Social learning is "learning by interacting with other people," (Horton, p. 399).  Social learning is always active, social and learner-driven (Horton, p. 400).   Social learning can take many forms and use many different tools.

Some examples of Social Learning:
Social learning connects learners and promotes collaboaration.

  • Sharing ideas or information via email, chat or social media
  • Collaborating on a document for a group project
  • Discussing learning topics and understanding deeper on discussion forums
  • Sharing on Adobe Connect sessions
    • Student presentations
    • Expert panel discussions
    • Question and answer sessions

This interaction with others strengthens our abilities to accomplish goals and ideals because everyone is part of a team.   Interaction forms a community.  People in the community often bond over common goals, purposes or struggles so naturally students in a course bond.  Individuals in the group can share ideas, resources or experiences which in turn, provides additional learning experiences for their peers.

Simon Sinek says that good leaders and communicators know what their "why" or purpose is in his Ted Talk, “How Great Leaders Inspire Action”.  The secret ingredient for social learning is that if all of the participants in the learning community share a common "why" they will be able to collaborate and actively learn from one another.  This strategy will not work for all learners or instructors, but it can be powerful if it is used properly.

Social learning can be very challenging because often learners and instructors are working asynchronously. Learners may be spread out, come from different backgrounds or cultures, and come in with different prior knowledge and communication skills.  In a face-to-face classroom instructors can mediate immediately, however in social learning there may be a time gap or a misunderstanding. 

Here are some tips for instructors:

  • Be a facilitator; not a conversation dominator.
    • Coach and guide students in what is expected
    • Fuel conversations rather than lead them
    • Provide constructive feedback
  • Provide clear guidelines
    • Provide grading guidelines
    • Provide clear expectations for how much interaction is required
    • Indicate when citations or additional resources are needed
    • Provide examples of clear communication
  • Clarify confusion
    • Answer questions
    • Direct conversations so they stay on topic
