How to print from Blackboard

With the new upgrade in Blackboard some of you may have noticed a printing issue. Currently, there is not an option within the Blackboard, however by copy/paste into a Word document instructors are able to print a Blackboard test to paper or save it as a .pdf.
If you are using a Mac computer – Blackboard has changed some functionality that has resulted in no longer being able to print tests using a Mac computer.
If you are using a Windows computer –This will cause a “screen shot” print so only the text displayed on your screen will be printed.

For example if you would like to print a test will have to be copied and pasted into a Word document and printed in Word.

New to TLT: Anthony and Lauren

TLT would like to introduce two new members to our team, Anthony Madison and Lauren Mathiott.

TLT Media has a new Classroom Support Specialist, Anthony Madison.  Anthony comes to us from Omaha, Nebraska where he worked as a Technical Support Supervisor at a call center.

In Anthony’s free time he enjoys the Kansas City nightlife and working on a “fixer-up” house.  He brings a great deal of technical experience to the department and has terrific rapport with the clients.  We’re lucky to have him!

Lauren Mathiott was hired December 15th as the eLearning Support Specialist for the School of Nursing. Lauren received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Northwest Missouri State University in Interactive Digital Media: new media. She is a proud Bearcat and excited about working with the School of Nursing and TLT staff.

In her spare time, Lauren enjoys spending time with her family, taking care of her dogs (Sophie and Lizzie), refinishing furniture and trying new restaurants.

TLT Media Rate Changes July 1

Classroom Updates

Spring brings a time of new beginnings, and it seems like everything TLT Media classroom support is doing is in the beginning phases awaiting the summer break for full implementation.  We continue to improve the informal learning enclaves with the updating of furniture and services in the southeast corner of 2nd floor Orr-Major.  Expanded electrical access, improved lighting, and comfortable seating along with a movable, dry-erase board enable a collaborative learning experience in a casual atmosphere.

We have added to our inventory of room spaces with the addition of G013 Olathe Pavilion.  It used to be the FM Discretionary Shoppe and I wish I had before and after pictures to demonstrate how our illustrious Facilities crews could turn a do-anything workshop into a really nice classroom/conference space.

Transition from LXR to ExamSoft Nearing Completion

This spring marks the final semester in our transition from LXR to ExamSoft as the primary system for high-stakes online testing at KUMC. ExamSoft is a market-leading computer-based assessment-management system that supports exam creation, administration, delivery, scoring and analysis. It offers many new features previously unavailable in LXR such as option strike-out, the ability to zoom in and out of attached images, and support for mobile devices.

Hundreds of students are already successfully using ExamSoft in the CTC and we will complete the transition when we shut down LXR at the end of this semester. New Course Evaluation Tool to be Implemented Spring 2015

Course evaluations are an important part of evaluating our academic programs at KUMC and ensuring that we are providing quality educational experiences to students. Starting in Spring 2015, School of Health Professions and School of Nursing will be implementing a new tool for administering course evaluations, EvaluationKIT.

EvaluationKIT is a web-based course evaluation tool that will further automate the process of administrating course evaluations, as well as readily give administrators and faculty access to course evaluation response rates and results while maintaining student anonymity. Using its Blackboard integration, students will receive reminders to complete course evaluations within Blackboard, and will be able to complete the evaluations within the Blackboard system.

School of Health Professions will be implementing the system for all of its course evaluations in Spring 2015, while School of Nursing will be implementing the system for graduate course evaluations in Spring 2015.

Blackboard and Display Issues with IE

IE Users: With the new updated to Blackboard, you may experience some graphical layout issues when you log into Blackboard. If so, you will need to add https://bb.kumc.edu as a trusted site. Click here to watch a video on how to do this.

Blackboard Updated for Spring 2015 semester

Over January 5th and 6th, TLT did an update to Blackboard. The changes are not major updates, and you will probably not notice these updates. There are just a few added features. Below are a list of additions with links for more details about each feature.

  • Student Preview – Now you have the ability to log in as a student to see the course as a student. Click here for more info.
  • Portfolio Improvements- Portfolios are now accessed from the global navigation and have a new authoring canvas. Instructors can create portfolio assignments. Click here for more info.
  • Grading: Anonymous Grading - Instructors can hide student names from submitted assignments for anonymous grading. Click here for more info.
  • Grading: Delegated Grading - Instructors can delegate grading to specific users. Click here for more info.
  • Online Attendance Tool– This is a module we have recently installed for those that would like to track attendance in Blackboard. Click here for more info.

Blackboard Online Attendance Tool

If you would like to track attendance within Blackboard, follow this tutorial on how to use this tool.

Setting Up Course Dates for Attendance

  1. Select Online Attendance from the Course Tools section of the Course Management Menu.
  2. Select the Dates Setup button from the button row near the top of the page.
  3. Set the dates the Course Begins on and that the Course Ends on from the drop down menus:
  4. Select the days of the week the class meets on by checking the radio button to the left of the day.
  5. Select whether or not you want non-students to be visible by checking the radio button to the right of the text Hide non-students.
  6. Click on the Save Setting Changes button to save the settings you have set.

Taking Attendance by Student Name

  1. Select Online Attendance from the Course Tools section of the Course Management Menu.
  2.  Select the date you wish to set attendance from for the drop down date in the grey bar. Only dates that have passed will be visible.
  3. For each student, you will want to set their attendance. The default is set to P, which is suggested to be used for Present.
    Possible options include:

Getting an Attendance Report

  1. Click Export on the main button bar.
  2. Save or export the Excel file.
  3. This Excel file will contain your attendance records.

Adding Attendance to Grade Center

This cannot be done automatically. You will need to run an attendance report (above). Then, manually create a column in the Grade Center. Finally, you will have to manually enter your grades from the report into the Grade Center column. The purpose of this tool is to track and not grade.

OPTIONAL (Seating Chart)

You can set up an seating chart if your students all have assigned seats. You can attempt playing with this feature, or contact TLT if you need further assistance assigning seats.

Blackboard Upgrade January 5th

The Blackboard upgrade has started and Blackboard is currently unavailable.

UPDATE: The Blackboard upgrade is progressing. We will be up and running tomorrow. Thank you for your patience.

UPDATE: The upgrade is still on going. Blackboard may be up and down several times before we are completed. It is recommended that you do not start anything vital to your courses at this time.

UPDATE: We are in the final stages of the upgrade process. You may see Blackboard up but we are still testing to make sure everything is functioning normally. I will update the blog when we are ready to go live.
