Blackboard - New Features for 2014

At the end of December, we did an update to Blackboard that included some feature updates that you may not be aware of. Check out these new features (click on link to watch video of feature):

  • In-line grading - no need to download that Word doc, add comments, and then reload. All of this can be accomplished with in-line grading, all on one screen. In addition to the video link above, here is another video link for students (or yourself) if you are having difficulty viewing the document and comments on one screen. (Tip: You have to collapse some frames for a bigger view.)
  • Test Options - now have more flexibility when you provide a key to all students or set up one student to take a quiz at a different time than other students in the course.
  • Test Access Log - want to know when a student took a test and how long it took them. Now you can with this log report.

Just to let you know, we don't plan on making any new major updates until the end of this year.

Wearable Technologies

Although this topic is not new in the medical field, it is becoming more popular as consumer products. Some of the more popular ones are the Fitbit which is a pedometer and tracks sleeping patterns, Nike FuelBand which tracks your activity, Samsung Galaxy Gear which is a smartwatch, and Google Glass, the glasses that have a built -in camera and small view screen. TLT has acquired Google Glass and reviewing this new tech to see how it may be incorporated into teaching and learning.

Educause, a leading non-profit association whose mission is to advance higher education through the use of information technology, publishes a popular review of need-to-know digital trends in its 7 Things You Should Know About series. For more information about wearable technologies, click this link.

If you are interested in all the hype of Google Glass, stop by the TLT EdTech office in 3014 Taylor and ask for Sonny, or you can follow my blog at http://sonnyglass.blogspot.com/

Welcome Doug Adams

We’re very excited to announce Doug Adams as our new TLT Educational Technology Liaison for SoM. Doug comes to us from the KU-Lawrence campus, where he has helped many faculty successfully integrate instructional technology into their teaching. He starts February 3rd. Nellie Modaress will assist as we transition Doug into his many responsibilities. (BTW, he’s not the Doug Adams who wrote “The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy”.)

New TLT-EdTech Offices

In November 2013, TLT-EdTech moved from G010 Wahl West to 3010-3014 Taylor. Also, we combined our conference room and training room into one room, located in 4025 Taylor. Please drop-by and see our new offices! (Our phone numbers all remain the same.)

Feature in Blackboard not working with Java Update

The new Java version (Java 7 Update 51) will not allow a certain feature in Blackboard to function properly. If you choose to update to this new version the multiple uploading of files in the content collection will not work. If you use this feature the work around is to either not install this version of java. If you already have installed this version of Java and use the feature to upload multiple files you will need to roll back you version of Java to 7 Update 45 which is the latest Java version that this feature works in Blackboard. If you have any questions about this issue please contact TLT at 913-588-7107 or tlt@kumc.edu. We apologize for any inconvenience.
